What makes us different?    A Ryde Aged Care Facility

There are many special things about Clermont and here are just a few of the things we do that make us different from other aged care facilities:

University Research Project into Oral Health.

The Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Sydney recently engaged in a research project with Clermont focusing on the "Residents' Perceptions of Oral Health".

The research project conducted by Dr. B.C. Webb was developed to look in to the dental health issues of residents in aged care facilities. This important area of dental care and research has been neglected by the Dental Profession over a long period of time. With an increasing aged population in Australia, this area of dental hygiene will become increasingly important over the next three decades. The Research Project involved several weeks of interviews, discussions and examinations and will lead to important reforms and recommendations once the findings are completed, evaluated and published. Clermont is proud to be a partner in the conduct of this important research project.

Our association with APAC.

The Acute/Post Acute Care NSW (APAC) chose Clermont Aged Care as the first facility in the Ryde area to be a participating member of the Northern Sydney Acute/Post Acute Care Team.  This is a service that enables patients from both the community and Aged Care Facilities to be treated at home thus avoiding a sometimes lengthy stay in hospital.  This service has been well received by families as it means the residents are able to stay in familiar surroundings while receiving I.V. Antibiotics. Only those facilities that have the necessary expertise in this type of care and nursing are chosen and Clermont is proud of the fact that in our area, we were the first to be approached for this very important initiative.

The Ryde Aged Care Rapid Response Team also work closely with Clermont Aged Care providing Clinical Assistance and Education where required.

Partnership with ACU for the training of Registered Nurses.

Clermont has been providing Clinical Facilitation for Nursing Students from Australian Catholic University since March 2007.  This means that groups of students from 1st Year to 3rd Year attend Clermont throughout the year for placements of between 3 & 4 weeks where they gain valuable knowledge and experience in Aged Care, Mental Health and Palliative Care under the supervision of Registered Nurses and the DON & DDON.

This practical and "hands on" environment provides a "live" workshop for the Registered Nurses working towards their degrees.

Lifestyle Program

Although nursing and care management is a very big part of what we do, it is the lifestyle that we offer that makes us different.

Our Lifestyle program is ever evolving, catering for new ideas and a changing Resident base. Activities and sessions come into being directly from the  requests from Residents themselves. For example, “Creative Writing” was a request from one of our Residents, our “Ladies Morning Teas” from a conversation with two residents and our Friday “Poetry & Music” series came from an old bush poem that was read out during a Quiz Session and which evoked memories and reminiscences about hearing poems at school.

We provide so many things each month with entertainers coming in to perform concerts, religious services conducted by local Churches, a Music Therapy program every Friday. Our in-house activities include bus trips, bingo, arts & crafts, cooking, Silver Service, Breakfast Clubs and, of course we observe all commemorative days such as St. Patrick’s Day, Chinese New Year, ANZAC Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas and others.

There is always lots of fun things happening at Clermont. Visit us on Facebook!

Music Therapy Program

We have a unique program that engages the mind, body and spirit in live and inter-active music making. Music therapy is planned and systematic in its use of music to promote health and wellbeing. We offer a variety of musical experiences including instrumental improvisation, singing, song writing, drumming, music and movement, reminiscence, relaxation, participation in ensembles and the opportunity to gain new musical and non-musical skills. The program has the advantage of being able to work individually with residents and to offer a high level of support. We support and develop innovative best practice and the program has been recognised through the Positive Living in Aged Care Awards receiving a “highly commended” status in 2012.

Most of all, we enjoy ourselves! Music is and can be deeply connected to memories and is often such a major part of our lives in many and various ways. Through music we bring joy to our staff, our residents and their families.

Creative Writing Group

One of our Residents Gwendyth asked if it was possible to have a Creative Writing Group.

Now every Monday afternoon, a group of Residents get together, chat and pick a topic for the days session, have a cup of tea and share old memories and at the end of the session, they either create a Short Story or a Poem to put down their thoughts and memories.

Clermont Annual Pantomime.

Since 2006 Clermont staff have written, produced and performed a Christmas Panto for residents.  This has become a most popular event and staff have delighted residents with a new insight into such favourites as Cinderella, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and The Wizard of Oz, as well as a Las Vegas style variety show.  A DVD is produced each year so that a copy can be given to each staff member participating and other copies can be sold so that funds raised can be used in our Therapy and Lifestyle programs. In 2011 we received an award for this innovative activity at the Aged Care Australia Congress held on the Gold Coast.

Participation in the PerCen Dementia Care Project.

In May 2009 Clermont became part of the PerCen Dementia Care Project.  This study ran over 18 months and during this time 4 staff (1 R.N., 2 AIN's and 1 Activity Officer) attended a full week's training at University of Technology Sydney.   The aim of the study was to train staff to look at a broader range of interventions when dealing with residents with behavioural issues.  Being part of the study  has shown great benefits at Clermont especially when dealing with challenging behaviours that are a result of age related issues exhibited by some residents

The Ant & Becks Show

Mix 106.5 visited Clermont on 17/2/11 for a stand-up comedy routine by the Ant & Becks Show.  The residents had a great time and audience participation was good.  The team from Mix provided a wonderful afternoon tea for residents and staff and spent time chatting with the residents when the show was finished. Clermont has a long and positive association with the media as also seen on the link on our home page to the Today Tonight piece ran on Channel 7 some years ago.
