Creative Writing

One of our Residents Gwendyth asked if it was possible to have a Creative Writing Group.

The Activities Department went around and asked if anyone would be interested, a small group decided to give it a try, they enjoyed their first session, not that everyone was verbally joining in but they still wanted to return for another session.

Now every Monday afternoon, a group of Residents get together, chat and pick a topic for the days session, have a cup of tea and share old memories and at the end of the session, they either create a Short Story or a Poem to put down their thoughts and memories.

Please enjoy these pieces of poetry by the Creative Writing group. The poems are ordered my newest to oldest from the top.

INSPIRED

Through life as we walk, we may stumble and fall
Certain people are there to answer your call
From Doctors to Priests, Parents and Friends
These people leave a mark that stays to the very end

Someone who’s a fighter and never gives in
Who fights all their battles with courage and a grin

A person who’s open, honest and true
Never turns their back and is always there for you

And their strength of character is something to behold
Their dignity and respect never grows old

A creative person, whether they write sing or build
Can inspire the soul and lift you higher than a hill

They inspire and influence, they fill us with hope
With courage and determination, they teach us to cope
The unassuming people, who never back down
Lift the rest of our souls onto rock solid ground

NOW & THEN

Looking back at days past, of a simpler time
In the days of our youth, when Mother’s word we did mind
We walked to school on dirt roads
We wandered hill and dale
We didn’t have fancy cars
Or money to ride the rail

Looking back at those days, time passed by slow
There was no rush to be nowhere, and you knew friend from foe
We didn’t have a cluttered house
We had all that we need
We had a limited of everything
Advice today should heed

Looking back to yesterday, to that simple time
There wasn’t this technology, but there was peace of mind
We didn’t have everything
We didn’t shop twenty-four seven
We did have respect instilled
And our way of life was heaven

Looking back from today, we see all the change
See the good, see the bad, it’s written on this page
We are thankful for the easier way
We appreciate all the time
We know what brings happiness
And that is what we lost with the simple life

GOLDEN YEARS OF TELEVISION

Gather ‘round the old set, tune in for the show
Soapies on at midday, love stories tangle & grow
Meeting up with neighbours, to chat about the plot
Who’s seeing who and who will get their lot

Kids come home in the afternoon, the tv turned up high
Car chases and sirens, or the Lone Ranger riding by
The loungeroom now a wreck, the shows over and done
Kids outside reenacting, good and baddies with a stick gun

The old man home from work, the news on at six
Silence is the golden rule, lest you want the stick
Misery and woe, is all the news you get
The same horrid stories, all of which you want to forget

Family time is here, ‘round the set again we sit
For comedy and laughter, and a bit of old slapstick
Watch our favourite characters, laughing until you cry
Never want the show to end, the saddest of goodbyes

We love our daily shows, and tune in every day
Never miss a single show, listening to every word they say
Waiting till next week, for the brand new episode
The excitement builds all week, feels like you will explode

The days of the olds shows, seem so far away
Today’s shows are empty, lifeless, dull and grey
So take us back in time, and replay those shows again
We’ll gather ‘round that old set, like an old friend.

SMOOTH SAILING & ROUGH SEAS

There’s a little saying or motto,
used by the Boy Scouts
Be prepared in everything,
then you have no doubts

Like the Irish golfer,
who wore two pair of jocks
In case he got a hole in one,
like his old socks

Expect the unexpected,
we’ve all heard this said
So make sure you’ve been and gone,
before you go to bed

Illness, bills and kids,
you never know when they’ll decent
If you aren’t ready for ‘em,
they’ll drive you ‘round the bend

Make your plans and stock your shelves,
right to the brim
Then hope like heck,
you never ever have to use ‘em

To be or not to be,
an eloquent way it’s put
Don’t put of today,
and strike while the iron is hot

If you head these words,
embarrassment you may stop
Check the weather before you leave,
or flowing skirts won’t drop

Life has its own way,
of bringing chaos, trick and fun
So to keep your peace of mind,
know your song before it’s sung

And at the end of the day,
when you’ve packed, planned and thought
Life has a special way,
of spanking you so you’re well taught.

LAUGH UNTIL YOU CRY

The highs and lows of everyday,
we all know their face
A simple thing from out of nowhere,
stops you in your place
A kind word, a token gift,
can raise your soul to fly
A silly act makes you smile,
then laugh until you cry

The darkness can strike at any time,
leave you lost and blue
You tread water trying to fight,
but there’s nothing you can do
Then as soon as you fell,
you’re hopes climb so high
You feel a chuckle and a giggle,
then laugh until you cry

The shock of news can bring you down,
and leave you standing still
The cold and rain darkens your mood,
as it comes over the hill
But then the clouds break up,
as the sun fills the sky
And joy soon replaces sorrow,
and you laugh until you cry

The moods they come and go at will,
sometimes good sometimes bad
But when a mood comes,
there’s no point in asking why
Soon sorrow will be joy,
and you’ll laugh until you cry.

KEEP ON KEEPING ON

When standing at the forked road
And confusion lies ahead
Don’t ever take a back step
Keep on keeping on

When life starts to bring you down
With its heavy weight and woe
Lift your chin and march forward
Keep on keeping on

When obstacles block your vision
And the hill looks too high to climb
Take a deep breath and dig in
Keep on keeping on

When sickness pays a visit
And your views from a hospital bed
Look for the silver lining
Keep on keeping on

When everything seems pointless
It’s now you need to stand
Keep going just to survive
Keep on keeping on

When the negative in crushing
Your positivity shines through
It’s infectious to all others
Keep on keeping on

When here is not the place for you
Look to the bright side of life
Perseverance pays off
Keep on keeping on

WOE IS ME

I walked out my house this morning
A black cat crossed my path
I crossed my fingers and turned three times
And walked away quite fast
I watched each step I took
Minding every crack
I did not want on my conscience
Breaking my Mother’s back
I dodged around a ladder
That leant against a wall
Then I tripped upon the gutter
A new mirror broke my fall

My luck had turned to bad
I needed a help a fix
I bought an old horse shoe
And upwards held the tips
Then I saw a penny and picked it up
Right in my hand
Now if I had a rabbits foot
I would be safe and grand
I heard the bells ring out
In the town’s square
I knocked on wood and hurried off
So I could be right there

I decided I should be home
Where I’d be safe and sound
Surrounded by all my charms
Standing on lucky ground
My new horseshoe on the wall
My feather in my hair
My fingers crossed and four leaf clover
Right beside my chair
I sat and wondered why
This bad luck has come to me
Then I noticed on the calendar
It was Friday the 13th

COOKING WITH MUM

All those years ago, standing in the kitchen with Mum
Aprons on, table prepared, recipe book on its stand
A coating of flour spread across the table
Ingredients ready to begin
Mixing bowls and kneading dough
Sneak some mix before it’s in the tin

Little treats and snacks for lunch, Bread, Butter and point
Mum made it so much fun, never a chore always a treat
All the topping sat in little bowls
The sauces there for extras
Relishes, mustards all home-made
Mum made them all, there was none better

From treats  to cakes to the Sunday Roast
The house filled with the most beautiful smells
Those old recipes were handed down
From Mother to Daughter to Me
Then came my time to pass them on
To share with mine my Mothers Memory
